While most of the world was watching the WWE drama between Israel and Iran, the Pentagon was quietly swearing in execs from Palantir, Meta, Open AI. The CTO of Palantir, Chief Product officers of Open AI and META, and a product researcher from Open AI. No training, no introduction to the Army and commissioned. A slap in the face to every field grade who had to climb the ranks to make the rank. Most of them had to serve in a combat zone to reach LTC.
As much as I’d like to say this is new and unprecedented its not. Throughout World War Two several industry executives were put into uniform to work on classified projects strictly controlled by the military. What is unique about these appointments are they will serve in a reserve capacity, meaning they will be working for their respective companies and doing reserve duty on the government AI / VR classified project.
Most officers receive reserve commissions. The regular commissions are reserved for the service academies. The fact these execs are now reservists means DoD wanted some measure of control over them via the UCMJ. My guess is this is a way to keep them under the DoD thumb and direct ethical standards, at least that is what I’d like to believe.
We will see how this plays out, but suffice to say this doesn’t bode well for humanity. Rogue AI is even more dangerous than nuclear weapons. It can think, move, operate and adapt quicker, longer and more sustained that humans. That fact alone should give everyone pause. The fact that DoD commissioned OpenAI execs means they are using the already rogue OpenAI platform…….What could possibly go wrong.
